Perpetual Trophies History

Winning one of the perpetual trophies on offer at the Victorian championships is a great honour for any player. What follows is a brief history of the awards and the people and horses they were named after:

Pip Wilson - best and fairest player award

Keith `Pip’ Wilson was an accomplished horseman with a love of the game. He was born in 1939, and began his 15-year polocrosse career with Warragul

Pip was a dairy farmer who had a passion for horses.

He was known as an extremely modest man who loved his horses and according to his son Jamie ``Jibsy’’ Wilson, he basically did everything with them, even working at the local racecourses.

Pip married Val in August 1962 and shifted to Buln Buln Club (north of Warragul), playing there until 1967. Around that time he bought a dairy farm at Willow Grove and gave the game away until he played for Trafalgar in 1969. He stayed there for two years and then went to play with Moe alongside names like Buck Buchanan and Johnny Robinson, (Julie Jolly’s father).

Pip also represented Victoria in 1972 at Cowra, NSW, in the second men’s side with players like Max Radford, Bill Coulson and Graham Lock.
Pip was 33 years old when he died at Sale Polocrosse carnival in an accident on the 30-yard line. He left his wife Val, sons Jamie, 9, and David, and daughter, Jacqui.

He is remembered as a dedicated father, husband and a good worker
An `easy-going, even-tempered fella’ who loved his wife, kids and horses.
Jamie is the only sibling to have played polocrosse, his career spanning from 1991 until 2002.

Alan Saltmarsh was the first player to win the Pip Wilson best and fairest player award.

Jamie Wilson is always on hand to present the trophy in memory of his father. He says it is a gut-wrenching experience and a hard thing to do but he also likes to take the opportunity to present the award. home

Anthony "Ant’’ Coridas - best number one

Ant’s first tournament was at age 14 was for Werribee at the Alex Yea tournament at Seymour in 1977.

By  1986 he played in the winning mixed team at the Naracoorte nationals on `Shilo’. He represented Victoria on five occasions, including nationals at Benalla; Warwick, Qld; Naracoorte, SA and Darwin, NT, as well as two international test series.

He won many team and individual trophies including most improved,  most co-operative umpire, best and fairest and best number one. Anthony worked on the family property and also became a stock agent and auctioneer.

He played up the front and people came to tournaments to watch him play because of his extraordinary ball skills. He was also charismatic and full of tricks - although not all of them were legal! He had a great sense of humour and a personality that drew people to him. home

Brian Coridas - Best Number Two

Brian was the founding patriarch of Corio Polocrosse Club and father of a wonderful group of three sons, Dallas, Anthony and Steven and four daughters who between them competed in 11 nationals.
For example, at Forbes in 1992 there were five representatives from the Coridas family.

Brian began with the Alexandra club in 1957 and then went to Casterton, playing in the A grade team regularly. He had a break from the sport for 11 years and then took it up again when his eldest daughter, Kerrie, started with the Sunbury club in 1976.

Brian helped form the Werribee club in about 1977 and then the Corio club in 1981 when the family moved to "Minya" near Torquay. "Minya" became the home of the Corio club and a place where many interstate players found a temporary home and job.

Brian was always a well-recognised figure as he stalked the sidelines of many A grade finals, shouting instructions at the players which inevitably included his favourite catch phrase - "team work!" home

Steven Coridas - best number three

Steven played mostly a two or a three and was known as the ‘smiling assassin’ who could even get two chukkas out of a dead horse!

He played at two nationals - Naracoorte in 1986 and Forbes in 1992. His

"Lisa" - best horse perpetual trophy

"Lisa" belonged to Fiona McDonald who played with Hexham, Victoria’s first polocrosse club. Fiona’s mother also played with Hexham, and Fiona married Ian Matheson a polocrosse player from Wakool-Euston . She was a member of Victorian polocrosse for many years.  home

Joan Ingram perpetual trophy - best lady player

Joan Ingram was a well-respected horsewoman and played polocrosse from 1974 until 1982.

The trophy was donated by the Ingram family in memory of Joan who was killed `too young’ in a car accident in April, 1983.  She started with Bairnsdale club and also played with Gelantipy and Trafalgar in the 1970s. She mainly played three but also one.  home

The Ross McDonald A-Reserve perpetual trophy

Ross McDonald played polocrosse from the age of 15 until he went to the army at age 19. He had a love of horses from an early age and with the help of Bill Vowell bought his mare called `Secret’.

Ross began breaking in horses after his stint in the  army and then began training race horses. His son Clinton played polocrosse but is now also a trainer and a `horse whisperer’ at Flemington. home

The Bess Coy best turned out team perpetual trophy

Bess Coy originally came from NSW and met Mick Coy at the Sydney show. Mick owned a property in the Western District of Victoria.
Bess played polo and was an inaugural member of the Hexham Polocrosse Club where she played with Bill Roycroft and Jack Riley. She enjoyed all areas of horsemanship including roping and rough riding and she was also an excellent camp drafter. home
