Ballarat Polocrosse Club History
Ballarat
is the oldest registered club in Victoria starting in 1948.
Bill Burke and Keith Saltmarsh leased a plot of
land in Gillies St Ballarat, they subsequently cleared it and the
grounds became the premier site for Polocrosse in Victoria.
The first Interstate Championships (the forerunner to the
Nationals as we know them) was held in March 1953 at Ballarat
between New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. This
was an annual event for the next three years.
The Burke Family are the first 4th
Generation players to be registered and are of course still
actively involved in the Club.
Ballarat for many years held the Victorian
Championships annually, it was also the venue for many
International matches including the Bi-Centennial Test Series in
1988.
In 1990 the club shifted from the grounds in
Gillies St to the new complex at the Ballarat Airport. A
move that has seen the club expand it’s facilities, we now have 7
fields, 300 yards a newly refurbished club rooms and ample camping
space.
We look forward to bright future as our membership
grows and we continue to upgrade and develop our grounds.
